Past Year – What Have You Learned?

Past Year - What Have You Learned?

Look back at this past year – what have you learned? Take some time now to reflect on how you are doing. What might you do differently or better as a result? Look at your goals – business and personal and think about how well they helped you meet the objective behind them.

Could you word next year’s goals different to make them more effective? Do you need to find an accountability partner to help you stick to your goals? Did you periodically check in on how you were doing through the year or is this the first time you’ve thought about it? Reflect on your Vision and Purpose and make sure that what you’ve been doing and plan to do next all align with your ultimate destination.

Questions To Help You Reflect On The Past Year

Use a format that also works for your employees to assess themselves throughout the year. Adopt it yourself. If you’ve not done that throughout the year, start now. Ask yourself:

  • What went well?
  • What could I have done better or differently?
  • Of the things listed above, what would have most impact on me and my business?
  • How can I address the things that will have most impact?
  • Think big and small. Use this questions to examine things at different levels of your business and personal life.

    What Went Well?

Looking back at this past year – both business and personal – what do you think went well? Note down your thoughts on paper. We rarely stop and think about our successes, especially the small ones, so take a moment now to reflect. It will help you stay motivated. Enjoy the moment – and remember to notice and enjoy your successes all year round.

What Could I Have Done Differently?

Now look at the other side. What hasn’t gone so well over the past year? What could you have done better or differently? Take a few minutes and reflect on the things that didn’t go the way you wanted, expected or hoped. What are your lessons learned from these experiences? Did you set unrealistic expectations? What did you not take into account that you should have?Did something happen that you didn’t expect – could you plan for that next time? Write your thoughts down and note what you have learned from your experiences this year that will help you next year.

    What Has Most Impact?

Of the things you identified above, what would have the most impact if you could do things differently? Ask yourself how much impact it would have to help motivate yourself to make changes. Ask yourself how easy some of these things would be to change. Change those things first so you feel you’re making progress. Be realistic as to how quickly you can change things.

What Will You Do To Change?

Jot down ideas for how you can make the changes you want to make. You don’t have to plan it all out now, but start thinking of ideas and how you can start mentally preparing for change. If there is a common theme for what you need to do, make that your theme for the coming year. A common focus can help keep you motivated. It will making you feel like you’re heading on one direction rather than going round in circles with all the different things you want or need to do.

If you set a theme, write it down somewhere prominent where you will see it every day. Share it with the people closest to you since a public declaration will make you more likely to follow through with it. Revisit your theme a couple of times a week and jot down some notes on how you’re doing to keep it at the forefront of your mind as the next year unfolds.

    My Question To You
